Koh Samui Island, Thailand - Geography

Koh Samui is an island in southern Thailand province of Surat Thani. Second island in Thailand Koh Samui is approximately circular with a surface 228.7 km square and is located about 25 miles to its widest point with an average width about 15 kilometers. Koh Samui is part of the Ang Thong composed of about 60 islands, many of which are uninhabited Koh very small and with the exception of islands tourist destination madePhan Ngan and Koh Tao. The island is located in the Gulf of Thailand and is 35 kilometers east of the city of Surat Thani. Koh Samui in it consists mainly of mountains covered with lush, dense rainforest. The highest peak on the island of Khao Pom, with a height of 635 meters.

The capital is Nathon Koh Samui, on the western side of the island, which is the administrative and commercial center of the island. Nathon is also a transportation hub for the mainland to the shipping companies that handle more frequent ferry services to mainland Donsak, about 60 km from the town of Surat Thani. Nathon is not a tourist center, but it has many tourist restaurants, some hotels and many good shopsstores the length of the main road through the city. The wide sandy beaches and strong winds often Nathon Beach is a popular place for the local kite-boarding.

The tourist resort of Koh Samui is due mainly to the north-east of the island. The most lively, with its long white sandy beaches and lively way to the beach, accommodation, shopping, dining and entertainment options galore Chaweng.
